Todd McKie

Todd McKie

Todd McKie’s residency at Aurobora resulted in the creation of a strong body of monotypes where a central figure dominates his compositions while vessels, coffee cups, branches, plants and animals float freely at the margins.  Mckie’s painterly sensibility gives these works their visual power, lending wit and humor to the narrative.

McKie began the printmaking process by laying down a flat color as a backdrop to figures which were released by a thumb-smudge or which emerged boldly from thickly painted plates.  In some of these monotypes, McKie has exposed the paper by wiping areas clean; in other prints, the artist strengthened the composition by adding ink and running the press a third and fourth pass over the same areas.  The result is that these works retain an importance stripped of superfluousness and reduce complex experiences to their essential bones.
