Lisa Williamson

Lisa Williamson is a Los Angeles-based artist known for colorful, precise works that blur the line between painting and sculpture. Her practice often features hard-edged forms, vivid palettes, and spatial play, creating compositions that feel both formally controlled and buoyant. Her work is held by LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and MCASD.

Based in Los Angeles, Lisa Williamson is best known for her colorful and visually precise wall-based art that blurs the line between painting and sculpture. For her residency with the gallery, she translated the totemic forms associated with her sculptural works into vibrant, two-dimensional compositions. Printed on 2 and 4-ply matt board, her monotypes include the use of mylar stencils to showcase a single, central form that seems to move forward and back again.

In her larger suite of work, circles float or migrate towards the edges, creating an internal and unexplained improvisational quality. In her smaller scale works, Williamson’s hard-edged ovoid shapes float atop rich, lollipop-palette backdrops for a joyfulness and formal experimentation that rest at the core of her works.
