The Aurobora Collection
Original works, most of them monotypes, created at Aurobora, the San Francisco printmaking studio. Explore the collection at Hemmings Gallery in downtown Ketchum.
Edward Hemmings came to know Aurobora through his work with Raven Art Services. As the studio was winding down, its collection came to Hemmings Gallery, and it has been part of the gallery from the very beginning — close to two hundred works, presented alongside the artists Hemmings represents.

About Aurobora
Aurobora was a printmaking studio in San Francisco where artists came to make monotypes and related work. The collection includes pieces by Lynda Benglis, William Wiley, Stephen De Staebler, John Zurier, Pia Fries, Joanne Greenbaum and Gary Komarin, alongside many others.
The approaches range widely. Some works pair the printed image with handwork, collage, transfer, linocut or woodcut, and a few were painted or drawn directly. Browse the available works below, visit the gallery, or ask us about a particular artist.
What is a monotype?
A monotype is a printmaking process that produces a unique impression. An artist applies ink or paint to a surface and transfers the image to paper, often using a press. Unlike an edition of identical prints, each monotype is an individual work.
Artists often take the process further. Some works in this collection combine the printed image with drawing, painting or collage — each artwork's page lists its recorded medium.

- Yes. A monotype is made through a printmaking process, but it isn't one of a set of identical prints — each is an individual, original work.
