There's a reason Thom Ross keeps returning to Buffalo Bill. Cody was a frontiersman and a showman who understood, a century before anyone had a word for it, that the story you tell about history can outlast the history itself. Ross paints in that same blurred territory, where a cowboy figure can lose his face entirely and still feel more present than anyone else in the room. Writing for Western Home Journal, Sabina Dana Plasse spent time with the paintings coming to our walls this summer, canvases pulled from the arena energy of the original Wild West show, from trick riders to Annie Oakley mid-shot, and talked with Ross about why the American frontier still feels like unfinished business, mythologically speaking. It's a good read, especially if you're curious how a contemporary painter decides what to leave out of a two-hundred-year-old story.

Eye on Sun Valley
We really enjoyed this Eye on Sun Valley piece on Melissa Graves Brown. It’s a great look at how she works, from the splattering, dripping, and layering that bring so much movement into her landscapes, but it also gets at something we value just as much about Melissa: how deeply connected she is to this community and how much joy and generosity she brings to what she does.

We love Steve Roden’s work, so this recent Newport Beach Independent piece on Steve Roden: Wandering immediately caught our attention. It’s a great look at the intuitive and wonderfully idiosyncratic way Steve worked, following ideas through drawing, found materials, symbols, sound and chance rather than forcing them toward a predetermined result. We’re very proud to have several of his Aurobora monotypes at Hemmings Gallery, and it’s great to see his work getting this kind of thoughtful museum attention.

Charlotte Hemmings is Edward’s sister as well as a Hemmings Gallery exclusive artist, and we’re incredibly proud of the work she’s been making. This profile looks at the path that brought her back to painting, and at the mix of rodeo, memory, performance and Western mythology behind her Phantom West series.

Eye on Sun Valley
This was a very special evening for us at Hemmings. We were so proud to show Delia Dante’s beautiful Warrior Women sculptures and to celebrate the work of one incredibly talented woman honoring another. Delia’s sculptural helmet for Mariel Hemingway was inspired by Mariel’s resilience, honesty and advocacy for mental well-being, and it was wonderful to bring the two of them together here in Ketchum for the exhibition.

We loved seeing this story about Wes Walsworth’s new SnoWing sculpture at Rotarun. Wes and Edward have been friends since they were teenagers growing up in the Valley, and there’s something pretty special about seeing his work now become a permanent part of a place generations of local families have grown up with. One of the things we’ve always loved about Thom Ross is that the humor in his paintings is only the surface. Underneath it is a huge amount of curiosity about history, myth, and the stories we keep retelling about the American West. This Western Art & Architecture profile is a great look at that side of Thom, from his lifelong fascination with figures like Custer and Billy the Kid to the research and strange historical details that keep finding their way into the work.

Eye on Sun Valley
We loved this Eye on Sun Valley piece on Cubby West Spain. One of the things that makes her work so special to us is the way she takes places we know incredibly well and makes us look at them again. This feature follows Cubby from the landscapes she grew up painting in Atlanta to the mountains around her home in Ketchum, which became the inspiration for her Backyard Prophecies exhibition at Hemmings.
