New York sculptor, Lynda Benglis arrived at Aurobora Press with the idea of experimenting with both form and content in a two-dimensional medium. Using circular copper plates, gestural drypoint markings, Japanese papers and color pigments, Benglis methodically began laying out a foundation for a suite of new work. As her residency progressed, the monoprints acquired a complexity through the slow accretion of overprinting plates and the addition of chine colle elements until each print became invested with its own physicality relating to both mass and surface. Benglis employed both tempera and watercolor to vary color saturations in conjunction with oil-based etching inks that were used primarily in the drypoint printing process. The confluence of varied techniques led the artist to produce a body of new monoprints that carry a welcome strain of whimsical unpredictability.
