Monique Van Genderen is an artist known for hard-edge abstract compositions that emphasize surface, material, and two-dimensional form. Working with traditional painting media and industrial materials, she creates bold, tactile works marked by unusual angles, dry brushwork, and rich color. Her work is held by LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Albertina Museum.

Monique Van Genderen’s works explore the intervention of hard-edge abstractions made from traditional painter’s mediums and various industrial materials. Her compositions revel in their two-dimensionality. Odd angles, wonky forms and dry brush strokes determine an underlying narrative. The compositions that Van Genderen produced in the Aurobora studio range from intimate to monumental in scale. Her works on paper hold an undercoating of wax which allowed reduced oil mixtures on both roller and brush to lend a reptilian-skin quality to some surfaces as she moved through her palette of deep velvety blacks, Prussian blues and acidic greens mixed from various bags of dry pigments. The artist’s concern with surface-finish and her reliance on painting materials to dictate a composition’s resolve is at the heart of Van Genderen’s method.
