Attack on the Deadwood Stage

Attack on the Deadwood Stage takes its subject from one of the most popular set pieces in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Stagecoaches carried passengers, mail, and money across long distances in the nineteenth-century West, and attacks on them became some of the frontier’s most sensational stories. In reality, such robberies were relatively uncommon and were more often the work of small outlaw gangs than the large-scale battles of popular imagination. In Buffalo Bill’s arena, however, the stagecoach attack became perfect theater: galloping horses, gunfire, pursuit, and rescue compressed into a few dramatic minutes. Ross’s painting captures that spectacle at full speed, showing how the Wild West helped transform rare incidents into enduring images of frontier danger and adventure.
