Burial at Sea (2026)

Burial at Sea tells the story of Old Charlie, Buffalo Bill Cody’s favorite horse and longtime companion. Cody later wrote that he had ridden Charlie for fifteen years and owed his life to the horse’s speed on more than one occasion. In May 1888, while the Wild West company was returning from England aboard the S.S. Persian Monarch, Charlie became ill and died at sea. Sailors stitched his body in canvas and laid him on deck beneath an American flag as members of the company gathered to say goodbye. Charlie was then lowered into the Atlantic. Ross strips the story down to its most poignant image: the horse, the flag, and the dark water. What first appears almost surreal is really a portrait of Cody mourning an animal he considered an old friend.
